How to pray

Be still and know that I am God...

You may feel uncomfortable about praying because you're uncertain what to say or how to talk to God. Always remember that you can pray anywhere, at any time: at home, in the tube, in church, doing the washing-up, driving the car. What does matter is that you are real with God, and that you always try to pray in a way that is natural to you.

Ideally, begin by just being still and quiet. Gradually let the hurry and worry of life drop away from you. Know that God loves you and cares for you. God is here with you now, and always. Be still and know.

Open your heart to God. Speak to him slowly in your own words. Be honest. Be yourself. Be real. Be still and listen.

Try thanking God for all the good things in your life. Say 'sorry' for what you feel you could have done better, or for things you have failed to do and which prey on your mind.

Ask for God's help and guidance in your life. Bring to mind those you care about who need God's compassion and love.

Sometimes words are unnecessary in prayer, or you find that they get in the way. If that is the case, don't worry. Simply 'be with God' - it is a very natural way of praying. It may be the only way we can pray when we're tired or ill. In the end, prayer is not our activity at all: it's God's activity in us - his Holy Spirit moving within us, bringing us wholeness and healing.

Be still and know that I am God...

Look graciously upon us, O Lord,
and give us thoughts that pass into prayer,
prayers that pass into love,
and love that passes into life with you for ever.
