Taizé Prayers at St Mary’s in 2010
Sunday 17 October (One World Week) at 6pm Taizé at St Mary'sAll over the world Christians have found inspiration and a new direction to their prayer life through the style of worship associated with the ecumenical religious community of Taizé in Burgundy, France. Many Taizé prayer groups have been established in the United Kingdom, including a number in London. In our area, regular meeting for Taizé music and prayers are held at St Mary's and at St Dominic's Priory, Southampton Road, NW5. St Mary's link with the Taizé style of worship dates from 1982 when pilgrims including one of the Taizé brothers, attending the annual Taizé Youth Pilgrimage held that year in London, stayed in the parish and presented us with a copy of the famous Rublev icon of Abraham providing a meal for the three angels, a symbolic Orthodox representation of the Holy Trinity. Ten years later, in February 1992, we began experimentally to hold occasional services in the style of Taizé. These meetings now take place about three times a year, on Sunday at 6pm, in association with Christians Together in Camden.
We ask you, Lord: what do you expect of me? And the Holy Spirit answers: If you already know and love the dimension of prayer, praise and meditation offered by the Taizé chants, or if you are just looking for the opportunity to set aside half an hour in stillness to come to terms with God's call to you, or to see your busy life in context, come and join us. The atmosphere is relaxed, informal and entirely non-denominational: all are welcome, committed Christians or those who do not yet feel sure enough to affirm their faith. We seek God and his purpose for us, together. In the praise, and perhaps especially in the silence, we lay ourselves and the direction of our lives before Him.
