Getting Confirmed

Being a Christian is a way of life, lived in response to Jesus who is 'the Way, the Truth, and the Life'. Discipleship embraces all facets of our lives, our jobs and our relationships - not just our intellectual beliefs or the bits we label 'religious'. None of us can be Christians by ourselves: we need one another's support and encouragement. We have as much to give, as to receive. That is why being a Christian includes sharing in the life of the Church, Christ's body on earth, as together we strive to be open to God in worship and prayer, and embody the values of the Gospel.

Through baptism, by God’s generous invitation we enter into eternal life and become part of the Body of Christ. The baptised are admitted to Holy Communion when they are at least seven years old. But the decision to commit one’s whole life to following Christ is an adult choice and confirmation is the opportunity for those in their teens or older to take this further step in discipleship.

Adults who were christened in early life and wish to start receiving Holy Communion may join a preparation group to explore issues of faith and prepare to be confirmed by the Bishop. Those who come to faith as adults and were not christened in childhood are baptised and confirmed at the same time. Preparation groups meet separately for teenagers on Sunday afternoons and for adults on Tuesday evenings, beginning each autumn. Confirmation takes place early in the new year.
