Getting Confirmed

Being a Christian is a way of life, lived in response to Jesus who is 'the Way, the Truth, and the Life'. Discipleship embraces all facets of our lives, our jobs and our relationships - not just our intellectual beliefs or the bits we label 'religious'. None of us can be Christians by ourselves: we need one another's support and encouragement.  We have as much to give, as to receive. That is why being a Christian includes sharing in the life of the Church, Christ's body on earth, as together we strive to be open to God in worship and prayer, and embody the values of the Gospel.

Baptism and Confirmation are really two sides of the same coin. They are called 'sacraments', meaning outward and visible signs through which we come to share more intimately in the life of Christ. Some people were baptized or 'christened' when they were babies. For them, confirmation at the hands of the bishop will be about an affirmation of their faith as they own for themselves the baptismal promises that were made on their behalf by their parents and godparents. For those not brought up in a Christian home or who were not christened as children, coming to faith and sharing in the life of the Church involves being baptized and confirmed by the bishop in a special service. The newly-confirmed are then invited to receive holy communion.

Being baptized/confirmed is the fruit of a personal decision to consciously follow Christ. It can take place at any age, but only when someone feels ready and prepared. The clergy are always glad to discuss this, and a person is welcome to share in a group of other people who are exploring whether this is the right thing for them. We also run a special explorers group for young people. If you want information about this, please contact Paul Perkins, our youthworker.
