Getting Involved

Study Groups

Sometimes getting involved in a large church can be daunting. One of the best ways of getting to know people better at St Mary's is via a study group. These meet during Lent and in the autumn on a weekly basis in groups between eight and ten in one another's houses. The groups normally meet in the evenings, in different parts of the parish; but there is usually a daytime group for those who find it more convenient. Each session begins with prayer and the sharing of a simple meal, followed by Bible study and discussion.

As a church we want to grow in real friendship, trust and integrity. Above all, we want to explore the meaning of our faith and grapple with the challenges of discipleship in today's world. None of us are experts: we are all learners in the kingdom of God. But we find that discussing our faith in a more relaxed atmosphere really helps.

Pastoral Network

Serious illness, bereavement, redundancy, loss of health, financial difficulties, the breakdown of a marriage or relationship, all expose our vulnerability as human beings. The Pastoral Network coordinates the various networks of trust and friendship within the congregation, so that together we can be mutually supportive and uphold one another prayerfully in times of need and stress.

We are particularly alert to the needs of older people and the housebound who can easily feel cut off and lonely. We operate a visiting scheme for them.
