William Laud (1573-1643). Archbishop of Canterbury under Charles I, proponent of the via media between Rome and continental protestantism, and the originator of Anglican canon law. A strong Royalist supporter, he was blamed for many of the excesses of Stafford and the King, and was impeached for treason by the revolutionary Long Parliament and beheaded in 1643.
